Lesson No.1 Embrace Rejections Jack started off as an ordinary guy with no connection to rich parents, relatives or neighbours, and he did not receive any fund from the local government while growing up. Ma said that when Kentucky Fried Chicken first entered the Chinese market, he applied for a job there alongside 23 other candidates.
At the end of the recruitment process, out of the 24 applicants who reached the final interview stage; 23 of them got accepted to begin work at KFC. Jack Ma was the only one rejected by the fast-food conglomerate. Jack also applied to gained admission into the prestigious Harvard University 10 times. And every time he applied, he was rejected by Harvard. Jack would later go on to say that these experiences (and rejections) made him used to being rejected. Getting to the business world, many of his ideas were rejected as being foolish but he wouldn’t listen to the sceptics. Lesson for the young people; To be successful in life, you have to get used to rejection.
You must be able to hear several NOs, in search of one YES. In fact, rejection did not only happen to Jack Ma, it’s what everyone who ever dream of greatness will go through. Whether it’s the author of Harry Porter, JK Rowling, Steve Jobs, Elon Musk and even famous basketball superstar, Michael Jordan, rejection is what they all learn how to smile at.If you want to be a successful entrepreneur or anything significant, you must learn to embrace rejections.

Lesson No.2 Ignore the Doubters and Naysayers. When Jack Ma first introduced Alipay commonly known as Zhifubao in Chinese, many people rejected the idea. Alipay is a third-party and online payment platform like PayPal. People told Jack Ma that Alipay would never work. In fact, they labelled the idea as being STUPID. Today, Alipay has overtaken PayPal as the world’s largest mobile payment platform and China has quickly become a country with paperless money transactions. Lesson for the young people; Whatever you do or want to do, be sure some people would think you’re stupid.
These are usually negative people who don’t believe in themselves. These people would be in your family, your neighborhoods and sometimes they may be your friends. It doesn’t matter who they are or how close they are to you, even if they are your parents, they are dream killers who need to be ignored. Many people thought that electric cars were not possible and whoever had this dream was to be labelled ‘crazy’. Elon Musk has proved them otherwise.
Tesla is now the world’s biggest electric car manufacturer with the aim to make its cars affordable and available throughout the globe. Ignore the pessimists and go for your dream because even if you fail, you’ll still be a better person than them. Lesson No. 3 Live With Passion In 1999, Jack Ma presented his idea of starting Alibaba to 17 of his friends in his small apartment. During that period, none of his friends ever knew if the idea was going to work. However, those friends who believed him and decided to grab the opportunity believed in one thing; JACK MA’S PASSION!
Lesson for young people; Stop complaining that you don’t get people to support your vision. While many people will think you’re mad, if you’re truly passionate about what you want to achieve, someone will be infected with your passion. Passion is contagious. If you have it, some people who will have it alongside with you. In fact, sometimes people will not support you because of your ideas. Some people will not be visionary enough to see your idea the way you see it, but because of your passion, they will be willing to make some sacrifices for you. Steve Jobs put the icing on the cake with the quote; “Your work is going to fill a large part of your life, and the only way to be truly satisfied is to do what you believe is great work.
And the only way to do great work is to love what you do.” If you love what you’re doing, you’ll be passionate about it. If you are passionate about your idea, everything in you will show it, even the hair of your head.

Lesson No.4 Focus on the mission. In an interview with American journalist and former talk show host, Charlie Rose; Jack Ma explained that the core competence and principle on which Alibaba is built is CULTURE.
Sure, technology is an important tool in today’s world. However, growing from 18 people to more than 20,000 young employees, Alibaba has to focus on the company’s mission, values and a culture of helping small company. Lesson for young people; Simon Sinek said, “Every company know what
they are doing. Many companies know how they are doing what they are doing, but only few companies know why they are doing what they are doing” WHY is the mission, the reason why you set
out in the first place. To grow a company, start a movement or change the world, you must know your WHY, your mission and be faithful to that all through till the end. Secret No.5 Don’t Make Enemies. One of the most unique aspects of Jack Ma’s philosophy is the idea of friendly competition. Jack Ma does not see his competitors as his enemies; rather they are friends whom he can learn from and who can challenge him to achieve his full potential.
Lesson for young people; The sky is big enough for all birds to fly. While life is extremely competitive, you’ll win life’s competition better and faster if you see yourself as your competitor. If you wake up each day to make yourself a better person, if you raise standard for yourself, if you don’t make excuses and you don’t stop being the best, eventually you’ll become better than anyone competing with you. In summary, if you’re a young person who wishes to become rich and successful in life;
Don’t be afraid of rejection. Get used to people saying NO to you. Ignore the negatives and the naysayers. Don’t allow them to kill your dreams. Live with a contagious passion.
If you’re passionate enough, you’ll get someone to make sacrifices for you. Know and never forget why you want what you want. Keep the mission alive. Don’t make your competitors your enemies. Compete with yourself.
Get better every day and you’ll end up being very successful.
